Feather trees, which are so named because they are made using genuine goose feathers, were first produced more than 100 years ago. Original feather trees are now rare antiques, but fortunately folk art companies like Bethany Lowe are creating quality reproductions of these early artificial trees. Early feather trees were made in Germany and featured wide spaces between their branches. Tabletop sized feather trees are becoming popular again for all seasons of primitive and vintage style decorating as a perfect means for displaying feather tree ornaments.
Feather trees are produced by wrapping goose feathers around stiff wires to form the tree branches. The tree branches are then attached to long, thin wooden tree trunk. The tree trunk is stabilized with a base, which is often in the form of a spool or decorated box.
I like using feather trees as a means of maximizing my decorating space – the tabletop sized trees don’t take up much room, but can be filled with many primitive ornaments. I just added this new Feather Tree in Spring Green by Bethany Lowe to Old World Primitives today:
